After a dry Saturday, heavy rains lashed Mumbai commencing pre dawn.It was observed that the winds suddenly changed from a Southerly direction after 3.0 a.m. Sunday, to Northerly. Indicates a abrupt development of a "thin" line of low pressure vortex off the Konkan coast from South Gujarat to South Konkan coast.
Between 3 am and 8.00am Sunday, Colaba measured 50 mms of rain, while it was 23 mms earlier from Saturday 8.30 am till 3.00 am Sunday. Correspondingly, the figures were 90 mms and 12 mms for S,Cruz. A wet Sunday morning indeed for Mumbai.
Satellite townships of Navi Mumbai and Panvel can get very heavy downpours in the pre noon hours of Sunday.

Rajesh i have one little query(my knowledge is not too great on meteorology),but why would a northerly wind cause rainfall? It would be blowing from inland and should not be moisture laden, right?

Non stop, pounding rain over Navi Mumbai. Rajesh - when is this going to stop?? Mumbai needs some bright sunlight atleast for a week. Let the rains go down south! Compared to last year 15/jul/2010 and this year 15/jul/2011 how does rain figures stand?? Must be more than excess!! By the way rains are likely to cross 2000-2500mm by july itself?

@rajesh, yes, this low pressure vortex has given heavy rains from south gujrat to konkan. Reports of flooding in ratnagiri & sindhudurg district, Huge cracks in 'protection wall' on konkan railway track near pomandi. Heavy rains will continue till wednesday. Heaviest rain (over 200 ml of rains in a day) could be in bhavnagar n bharuch district in south gujart. sunday to wednesday total rainfall for mumbai & suburbs (heaviest on today & tuesday)could be 300 ml (mumbai airport already got 90 ml since 3 am). Eastern suburbs (chembur, deonar) & thane might get heavier rain than island city.
