Yesterday after 10am weather has changed suddenly and sky got covered with thick grey clouds and after that Surat received some sharp short spell showers throughout the day. Total rain amount should be around 10mm.

I believe in the last few years mumbai rains touched 300 cms annually. It would be nice if anyone can share the stats.

couldn't go to haji ali today...bus frequency is bad today..further rain forecasted for today in mumbai??Is this all happening because of the vortex which was supposed to have formed?

Vijayanand, thanks for the Bangalore rain figures. It looks that Bangalore has not done bad in the last couple of years. Not sure why a reader was pointing towards 'severe drought' conditions in Bangalore. By the way do you have rain figures for the year so far?

Mine rain measurement of 180mm in 24hrs for Badlapur was near to accurate. Karjat too received 169mm in past 24hrs. And near by Ulhasnagar city received 115mm in past 24hrs. But from Badlapur to Karjat on Central Railway route rains were intense as Badlapur to Karjat belt comes under foot of Matheran Mountain range & Matheran Mountain Range runs parallel on west side of Badlapur - Karjat Railway and Road route .

A report in The Hindu

U.S. facing ‘worst drought’ in 25 years

The United States is facing its “worst drought” in 25 years that could fuel food price inflation as crop yields are hit, a top Obama Administration official has warned.

As many as 61 per cent of the land mass of the United States is currently being characterised as being impacted by this drought, the Agriculture Secretary, Tom Vilsack, told reporters on Wednesday at a White House news conference, noting that this drought is having an impact in crops.

“78 per cent of the corn crop is now in an area designated as drought impacted; 77 per cent of the soybeans that are being grown in this country also impacted. .....potey

I shall try to find out bangalore stats for 2012. This year has been quite poor on weather front. Till June end we got around 15 cms. Ideally we should have got 26 cms.

@sset and @vijayanand your analysis on Bangalore and Karnataka rainfall and concerns of it's intensity are real. Find more data and analysis from 1813-2006 on this webpage ...

www.tropmet.res.in/~lip/Publication/RR-pdf/RR-121.pdf

In the end of the report on page 129 you will find that the Karnataka plains have been receiving less rainfall in recent years (decreasing rainfall trend)... while North and Osuth Konkan have an increasing trend. Infact it is disturbing to see that the entire NW India, the food producing areas like Punjab , have a decreasing trend...

I have not read the whole report but if someone has the time please give us a summary of all that is presented there....
