Any explanation why Mumbai got 130mm rains around 6 hours in the morning of friday? Vortex formed?

Rajesh said...

SVT: As always explained, the off shore west coast trough generally strengthens when the seasonal Low over West India is strong. And weakens during the opposite. Now, the seasonal low, alongwith the monsoon axis has shifted South to Kutch, and the region has a Low (BB-5). That means the "fulcrum" of the west coast off shore trough is strong, and has to strengthen the trough also. So, on Friday, an UAC formed off the North Konkan coast at 700 levels. Such UACs strengthen the trough, but disappear as fast as they form, or merge with the trough. This caused heavy rains in Central and north Mumbai.
This could have been forecasted, knowing the formation of BB-5.
Now, as BB-5 fizzles out, the axis will move North from Monday. And the off shore trough could get weak. Reducing rains along Konkan next week.

Maybe most of MAHA extreme rains this monsoon was due to presence of west coast trough + UAC over GUJ/MAHA....
But as of now west coast trough has vanished from south india... even when it was present it did not give continuous 3 digit rains but only some disappointing odd 2 digit rains...

Augumbe required another 1500mm to snatch crown from Harnai!!

sset said...

Sorry I am wrong - just saw Pradeepji has posted places in MAHA with 6000-7000mm of rain since june - that means Augumbe can never make even to top 10-15. Probably Pradeep needs to put these in vagaries also.

Which is wettest spot in Maharashtra (june-aug) 2 months rain -> guess this would have got 7000-8000mm of rain (2 years of rain in 2 months!) - x

Mysterious Tamhini ghat -> wettest inspite on leeward side.

If this trend of rain continues for next 2 months MAHA will become amazon rain forest!

Arjun: For Mumbai, This week will remain at the normal rainfall rate of upt 20-25mms/day. I am not an expert and cannot forecast beyond 5 days.
Salim Ramani: Thanks for the feed back. It is feedback from readers, whether negative or positive, that encourages me to write and keep blog upto date.
Miral : Water is discharged from Bhatsa in anticipation of more inflow. Bhatsa cannot be filled beyond a limit.
sset: I am not too sure, and do not confirm with, this years' Harnai rainfall. seems something wrong somewhere.
