When I check the Maharashtra Water Resource Department website, the capacity for Bhatsa shows as 911 and for Vaitarna as 331. Why the difference?

Maybe you can shed some light on my observation. As of Sep 30,2013 all the lakes except Middle Vaitarna were full. Middle Vaitarna was short by about 70M m3. Based on your capacity data the lakes should have had about 1350M m3 of water. This is about 390 days of supply assuming 3.5Mm3 per day of withdrawal. The water should have ideally lasted till October end. But we seemed to be in a crisis by mid July.

Is the BMC not managing the supply properly? Is evaporation to the tune of 25%? Is the storage data incorrect?

From the Maharahstra WRD website, a rough calculation shows a withdrawal of 5.2M m3/day from Jan to Mar 2014.

Something does not smell right about the water supply management.

Thanks

srivathsa: The capacity of both these big dams is huge. But part of the water is reserved for irrigation. The volume shown is the % reserved for Mumbai...(as per BMC)

the consumption for Mumbai is 0.03800 Mcum /day , and actual requirement is 0.4200 Mcum
