Cloud tops in the cloud mass are around -50 degree celcius just south and east of Mumbai. The 500 MB vorticity charts seem to suggest a vortex forming just east of Mumbai the the 24 hours leading to 5:30 am IST on Saturday. The BBC website seems to suggest a lot of thunderstorms for Mumbai till Tuesday of the coming week.

Very sudden and unexplained development this, but then this Monsoon for Mumbai has been like that. Rains, more rains and even more rains.
