Posted Saturday Afternoon:

2019: Is Mumbai in for the fastest 2000 mms ever ? Will it beat the previous record of 60 days this year ?

Mumbai Santa Cruz total rain 1847 mms till 27th July Morning.

Will this year be the earliest 2000 mm (fastest) ever ?
The current record for the fastest 2000 mms at Santa Cruz was in 1965, when it touched 2000 mms on 30th July, in 60 days. Followed by 2005 when the total was surpassed on 31st July, in 61 days.

July End Totals..scruz 1965 ;2038 mms, 2005 :2019 mms

Short this year by 153 mms and 4 days to go to beat the record for fastest ever 2000 mms !
In 2013, t happened on 1st August !

Colaba, just for the records, has crossed 2000 mms by July 3 times. In 1886, 1907 and 1991. But, we are still way behind for this station to cross 2000 mms by July end.  colaba 1402 till date.
colaba total was 2687 mms on 15th aug 1954, and again
in scruz was 2403 mmson 15th aug 1954  and 2528 mms on 15th aug in 1958

Mumbai is set to be doomed.Irregular weather pattern dumping exceptionally huge amounts of water over a small patch of land and all gets pumped to ocean later. What a waste of valuable resource which could be used to serve drought affected areas?.Rather than blame authorities for not doing enough to prevent waterlogging, we must bring in climate experts to study what's wrong with the irregular rainfall distribution over the surrounding areas of the city and find ways to tackle it.

Hello Vagaries.
Had posted a note on the 14th anniversary of the famous 26/7 -2005 deluge here in Kea weather blog. Pleased to share it here.

14 years back around this time 1 pm...Almost a quiet and calm noon....The clouds turned dark grey with a rumble here and there...The birds were looking slightly fidgety and were seen busier than usual....Probably they may have sensed what was coming in the next few hours...A huge thunder, almost an explosion of sorts...Few drops of rain which were getting slightly bigger by the minute...A sort of puzzling look at the sky to check what was this all about.. Few murmurs amongst the onlookers on the street...Before you could blink and think....The heavens opened up only to calm down and shut doors around 4 or 4.30 am in the morning of 27/7--
Rest as they say is Geographical History

Agree with Kaushik....

I still feel over past 10 years: Konkan-Maharashtra, south Gujarat,East Rajasthan, central India is becoming more and more wetter. High rainfall spots are taken over by Maharashtra ghats leaving coastal Karnataka (like Augmbe) far behind.

On other hand southern India specially south eastern part has seen massive climate change - desertification due to continuous northeast monsoon failures - specially Tamil Nadu, South Andhra, south east interior Karnataka. Nowadays monsoon onset over Kerala/Sri Lanka itself is so weak we never realize this has happened.

Long duration of SWM extending till end October, strong rogue western disturbances which appear early starting from November do not allow NEM to set. Some climate change + nature destruction.

Nobody can explain mysteries of nature - only when we see we realize changes - only option is link rivers, save rivers or else people need to evict (no water).

Europe is under heatwave for months together (good for them - they need sun) while Mumbai - Konkan is under torrential rains!

Severe drought threatens Sri Lanka, Indonasia....In fact SWM never touched Sri Lanka. What I have seen whenever these South east asian countries are in drought it is highly likely that south India will also be in drought... monsoon axis will be always in higher latitudes...

Hi Novak Nole,

Good to see a cross over comment from KEA to vagaries on the memories of an unforgettable 26 July 2005. Stories of tragedy, bravery, resilience, suffering, courage all remain abound till date. Just like it happened yesterday.

Matheran as pointed by vageries snippets becomes wettest place in India!!!

Surprising wettest places are near to Mumbai, no wonder Navi Mumbai 2019 SWM was exceptionally extreme! Konkan overtakes Cherrapunji ...

It’s crystal clear from Imd. Chennai is in huge excess this monsoon till date irrespective of what mr. sset keeps of saying, facts coming out from the imd. This is the issue. I request sset not to spread false information. Real requirement of rains is at Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra. And we are happy if it rains more in west India to avoid successive drought.
