Satellite data over the Western Ghats reveals that Kerela had least amount of extreme rain events in the past 14 years. The average rainfall amount was greatest in Karnataka, but the most number of extreme rain events happened close to Ratnagiri, in Maharashtra. The areas most prone to heavy and extremely heavy rainfall are close to Mumbai in Maharashtra, and the area between 16.25-16.5°N and 73.25-73.5°E.

Something's terribly wrong with Mumbai's extreme weather events which have increased recently. These need to be studied deeply for reducing it's impact. Only the regions around Mumbai and North west coast are witnessing these events regularly.

Agree with Kaushik. Arabian sea between North Konkan and GUJ has become sweet spot for extreme rains. Entire Navi Mumbai flooded.... worst than Aug 29th. IMD was correct. Torrential downpours are like july rains and now being sept monsoon should have stopped and axis should have moved to south. Harnai / south Konkan would have touched 500mm in 24hrs..
IMD is correct...Tomorrow transport may come to halt...

Vijay yourself mentioned.... Few years back Augumbe used to cross 7000-8000mm but recent years it is struggling with 5000mm. KER does not even appear in top 10. All positions occupied by Maharashtra. Harnai MAHA in recent years is bagging with 6000mm annual rain but normal is 2500mm. Augumbe huge deficit of 3000mm by end of monsoon.
Apparently Annamudi hills of KERALA is highest point of western ghat but state does not receive extreme rains and over recent years no system are forming over south west coast... may be climate change, topography, loss of forest with native trees, poisonous trees like rubber, arecanuts, eucalyptus instead of banyan,peepal,neem,jamun,bela.....

System in sept will delay withdrawal of SWM and disastrous for NEM on set ... every year same problem huge climate anomaly.

Great PJ (Pradeep John) has predicted 650mm for Mumbai 24 hrs. (Kea blog).Apparently PJ predicted same = 750mm for RAJ in 24hrs in month of july - it happened!
