Anna Mani - The Weather Woman of India

International Women's Day is an occasion to remember and celebrate talented female scientists from across the world. Today we pay a small tribute to the most distinguished Indian female meteorologist - Miss Anna Modayil Mani.

Miss Mani was born on Aug. 23, 1918 in Kerala, studied and researched in Chennai, Bengaluru and London. She was a student of CV Raman and later served as the deputy director general of the Indian Meteorological Department.

Her contribution to ensuring self-reliance in measuring aspects of weather is considered her biggest achievement for independent India.

She focused on accuracy of Indian weather measurement instruments for solar radiation and wind strength hence laying a solid foundation for today's solar and wind power as alternative sources of energy.

Anna Mani has also led a team of scientists who developed the Indian ozonesonde, a balloon-borne instrument to measure ozone levels as early as in 1967. The collected data became a real treasure to identify the dangerous changes in the atmosphere.

BB-2 Depression over southwest Bay of Bengal has further strengthened. 

Presently the depression is centered about 450 km southeast of Chennai. It is expected to intensify in to a deep depression.

However, much of the weather activity will be confined over the sea, and outer peripheral of BB-2 spreading into Tamil Nadu coast. Gusty winds reaching 50-60kmh are expected off Tamil Nadu. Sea conditions will  be rough.

System is not inflicting any dangerous impact along the coastline of Tamil Nadu, as it will escape its direct strike and roughest weather will remain confined over the Sea, off Tamil Nadu coast.

Pre Monsoon Activity Expected Soon

Low Pressure Area could bring Rain along Tamil Nadu Coast

The Pre-Monsoon season officially commences from 01st March over NE, South Peninsula and the Bay Islands.

There can be no fixed formulas for this, and depending on formations of weather systems time period may vary. (Vagaries)☺. 

Presently, Low BB 2 pressure area,  second of the season has formed in South Bay. 

Significant cloud cluster is seen and significant rapid growth is possible.. This weather system is expected to become more prominent, increase in depth and shift over Southern parts of South Bay. 

It is likely to turn in to a depression.
