Cold day in U.P.

Cold report from Odisha by Vag. Mitan

Bhubaneswar witnessed a historic cold spell as the minimum temperature plunged to 9.4°C, marking one of the coldest January nights ever recorded in the city. The temperature, logged on January 8, 2026, stands as the third-lowest January minimum since 1952, equalling the record set on January 3, 1952.

Meteorological records show that only two January nights have been colder in the past—8.6°C on January 5, 1992, and 9°C on January 17, 2003. The latest dip highlights the intensity of the ongoing cold wave sweeping across Odisha.

The chill is not limited to the capital. Similipal recorded a freezing 0°C, while G. Udayagiri and Semiliguda reported 3°C and 4.1°C respectively. In total, 23 locations across the state saw temperatures fall below 10°C, with many areas recording readings 5–8°C below normal.

The severe cold has disrupted daily life, affecting vulnerable populations and wildlife alike. The Meteorological Department has warned that the cold wave is likely to intensify further, with little relief expected before January 12, and minimum temperatures in some pockets possibly dipping below 5°C.
