Mumbai Heat Statistics:

February 2025: 26th touched 38.7c (+ 5.9c)...Hottest in 5 years.
All Time record for February is 39.6c in 1966.

March 2025: 11th March touched 39.2c.

All Time March Record is 41.7c in 1956.

In Mumbai, days when the maximum temperature exceeds 37 degrees Celsius, or settles between 4.5 degrees Celsius to 6.4 degrees Celsius above normal, it is classified as a heatwave.

A severe, or extreme heatwave, occurs when the daytime maximum temperature settles at 6.5 degrees above normal or more.

Based on an analysis of India Meteorological Department (IMD) data, the recently unveiled Mumbai Climate Action Plan (MCAP) shows that the city has experienced a total of 13 heatwaves since 1977.
More than half of these (8) occurred in the last 15 years, in line with the rising annual temperatures in Mumbai. IMD data indicates that between 1973 and 2020, the city has grown warmer by 0.25 degrees Celsius each decade.

 Mumbai saw heatwave events in 1977, 1981, 1985, 1989, 1995, 2005, 2009, 2013, 2014 and 2018. Severe heatwaves occurred in 2004, 2011,  March 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025.

Mumbai’s average annual temperature has remained consistently above normal for the last 16 years, and data shows that the city is getting hotter. Between 1973 and 1998, the annual mean temperature of the city showed an average departure from normal of +0.004 degrees Celsius per year, which rose to +0.011 degrees Celsius per year between 1999 and 2008, and then further to +0.042 degrees Celsius/year between 2009 and 2020.

Actually for Mumbai, More stress is on Urban Heat islands Effect :

“The overall air temperature trend highlights warming related to global climate change, whereas the trend of increase in late evening and night-time temperature points to a much more localized phenomenon associated with city-scale urbanization and development. The long-term trends of increasing night-time and evening temperatures correspond well with the concept of urban expansion, whereas the rise in post-monsoon and winter temperature trends point to the post-monsoon heat phenomenon,” the MCAP states, though the raw data has not been provided.

19th March Post:

The first half of March saw above-normal temperatures, with the highest recorded at 39.2°C on March 11.Though the sea breeze usually helps cool down the city, a change in wind patterns will delay its arrival, causing temperatures to soar.

After the anticipated "cooler break", temperatures are expected to rise again from March 22.

Mumbai can brace for another round of hot and humid weather soon.

March 23, the mercury could cross 36°C, making the city feel hotter than usual. However, it’s unlikely that the temperature will exceed 40°C this March.

With the upcoming change in weather conditions, a hot and sultry week ahead, especially if you live along the Konkan coast.

12th March

Mumbai:

Very high daytime temperatures are being felt in Mumbai, resulting in " heat wave " status.

Warm/hot daytime winds, and late sea breeze set in, resulted in rising temperatures in Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Usual for this month, but a longer persistent this year.

Being on Wind confluence, Gujarat getting among the top 10 hottest places in India.

Night was clear,  hence heat lost by radiation resulted in nights getting cooler by 15°c -21°c.

Now, with  Western Disturbance  in action, we may see some day temperature relief for Mumbai.

Sea breeze can also commence by noon.

Definitely not cold, but a 3-4°c drop in effect can bring the day down to 33/34° from the current  38-39°c.

Outlook: 13th -17th:

Mumbai:👇

Day: 34°- 35°c

Night: 21°c.

Pune: 👇

Partly cloudy. With day around 37°c and night at 19/20°c.

 9th March..2025

As the Anticyclone dominates in the North Arabian Sea, the " clockwise" winds blow along and into Gujarat and Konkan coast, resulting in heat Wave " conditions in the region.

Disruptions in the :Western Disturbances" , due to more convergence in the upper Jet Streams are preventing the normal cooler winds from blowing into Maharashtra and Gujarat.

However, the lack of cloud moisture results in loss of heat by radiation in the nights...causing more Diurnal ranges,
