Hi Rajesh,
Just wanted to know was it fog or smog in Mumbai that was present on Saturday ??

Abhijit Modak said...

Mumbai saw high pollution yesterday in morning and then term was change to smog.. But due to pollution it was not formed ! Dec rains are rare in Mumbai & so the humid weather at this time of the year.. Due to cyclone Ockhi effect, moisture has increased in air as well as on top layer of soil as rain occurred over wide spread area for prolonged 48hrs, so overall current cool weather just on surface cooling up the warm moisture(water droplets) available in lower air or just above of surface and same is producing the fog which is natural fog formation process..

And overall look of grey & white layer and low visibility is fog characteristics. Smog has much higher visibility with look as yellowish/brownish layer

Nice explanation Abhijit

Shripad: What Mumbai saw and experienced on Saturday was fog. Of course the usual dust particles from city are always present, so fog was combined with the dust hanging around. The hanging dsut starts to cling to the minute water particles in the air, and makes the visibility even lower. Now, again, the water moisture particles in the air are more on these days (Saturday) as the fog, a nascent form of stratus/ low cumulus clouds, have formed at ground level. Humidity was also 90%+ on Saturday.
Again, it could not have been a local smog, as the Saturday fog covered vast areas in outer townships from North Mira Road and East Badlapur, and was all along the Mumbai -Pune road. We had seen thick fog in Pune also.
