The queer Monsoonal  behavior continues...
The Monsoon continues to progress teasingly and in jerks, having entered Southern parts of Interior Maharashtra but not Mumbai yet !
Vagaries is observing the UAC off the Maharashtra coast, which will form as an small east- west upper trough off North Konkan coast by Wednesday...And hopefully we advance the Monsoon into North Konkan on Wednesday (Including Mumbai & Pune).
Vagaries may advance Monsoon upto South Gujarat coast and South Saurashtra Coast along with..

The off shore trough will activate from Wednesday evening, bringing good rains to Konkan on Thursday /Friday.

Mumbai: After a disappointing Wednesday, Mumbai will see, with the arrival of the Monsoon, good and steady rains on Thursday ( Avg  25-35 mms) and Friday ( 45-55 mms). Some places in North Konkan may get 80-100 mms.
Gusty Monsoon winds on Thursday and Friday.
Much needed relief and rains for Thursday in Mumbai.

Much needed...as the Water situation is getting to be serious and worrisome..Mumbai lakes have now only 0.77 lmltrs ( 14.47 full capacity) of water storage..enough for 25 days.

Pune too will see its famous "Pune rains" on Thursday thru Saturday.

Saurashtra region will get showers in some patches, and on Thursday, a few places may get heavy showers.

The puzzle of the Monsoon continues ! After assurances, the Climate system is  not keeping up to its word ! :-)

Now, an UAC has formed on the West Bengal coast..it is not a Low Pressure area, and not descended.

The UAC, tilting South West with height, is expected to rapidly move West As a result:

Saturday 22nd: Rains in North Chattisgarh, Marathwada and parts of Madhya Maharashtra (Specially South).
Sunday 23rd: Heavy thunder showers activity in North Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada and North Konkan.
Enhanced rain activity in Coastal and adjoining Karnatak.
Monday 24th: Rainfall and Thunder activity in Marathwada and North Madhya Maharastra. North Konkan will get thunder showers with possible Monsoon advance.

Mumbai
Saturday partly cloudy, warm and humid. High humidity levels will bring discomfort. Few passing showers in some parts.
Sunday: Chances of thunder activity developing evening/ night. Otherwise hot.

Monday: Chances of thunder clouds drifting from the East very likely...Thunder showers in evening , with strong gusty wind...more chances for Eastern Outer townships and Northern parts.
Vagaries estimates the monsoon likely to move into Mumbai and North Konkan on Monday.

Panvel and Roha will have a weak chance of thunder showers on Sunday and Monday. Chances of clouds building up and drifting from East over the region on Monday

Pune: Chances of a thunder shower on late Saturday night..with strong winds, temperature likely to fall during the rains.
Sunday & Monday  will see good scope of a thunder shower in the afternoon/evening in Pune.

Seems to be anther 3/4 days lull in the peninsula and Gujarat regions after Monday.

Aurangabad: Good scope of rains all over Marathwada on Saturday and Sunday. Aurangabad will get thunder showers on Both these days. Monsoon advance by Monday (Hopefully).

Maharashtra under large deficient of -71% as of today

Normally South-West Monsoon covers Maharashtra by 12 June.. But this year officially, we yet to see onset over the state so this has lead to deficit climb till negative 71%

Above map depicts Maharashtra conditions (district wise) till date.. Most are under large deficit

Maharashtra as whole map above

This maps depicts overall country situation which is on negative 43%

So due to non advance of SWM in Maharashtra and very less pre monsoon rains, Kharif sowing over large parts of state mainly in Marathwada & Vidarbha has been halted as yet!

Total Maharashtra State (All Dams) has just 6.29% live storage as on today !! Same day last year till today we had 18.98% storage ! So it shows how less water we have for current year due to bad monsoon in last Aug-Sep 2018.

Division wise storage as on today in % (in bracket for last yr):

Aurangabad 0.5% (15.66%)
Nashik 4.85% (14.43%)
Nagpur 5.66% (11.26%)
Pune 5.85% (18.87%)
Amravati 6.08% (11.8%)
Kokan 24.53% (33.68%)

From above we can get to know how Aurangabad division is worst hit with hardly any storage available in dams !

Jayakwadi dam (Paithan) is on 0% (last year same date had whopping 34.95% storage)

Also Manjara, Majalgaon,Yeldari, Siddeshwar, Lower Terna, Sina Kolegaon , Lower Dudhana are on 0%

Rainfall from Marathwada region till date for June 2019:

Aurangabad 13.8mm (deficit by -62mm)
Nanded 6mm (deficit by -73mm)
Osmanabad 16mm (deficit by -78mm)

Kannad 1mm, Phulambri, Jalna, Khultabad,Sillod & Soegaon on 0 till date !

The remnants of Cyclone Vayu as a low pressure pounds Rajasthan with very heavy rainfall.

Posted 19th June Wednessday:

Mumbai Water Levels getting Lower:

The lakes levels supplying water to Mumbai are getting lower...with the South West Monsoon getting delayed by the day...

Total Lakes Storage as on 18th June:

2019:       0.88 lmltrs
2018:       2.15 lmltrs
2017:       2.70.lmltrs

Full Capacity is 14.47 lmltrs...hence today lakes level is at 6% of capacity.
Water supply from Upper Vaitarna is Nil and Bhatsa has 1% supply only available.
City gets .034 lmltrs supply per day...Hence Mumbai has supply of around 30 days (with effective cut).

That is till 20th July 2019.
Now, what is required is the lake s to start filling up as soon as possible so that levels do not deplete.

Mumbai and the lakes got some showers due to the outer band effect from Cyclone Vayu last week...But was not enough to pull up the Monsoon into the city.
Colaba got a total of 127 mms and scruz 165 mms.
The Seven Lakes supplying water to Mumbai: Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Modak sagar, Tulsi, Vihar, Tansa.
Rainfall till 18th : Lakes:  Modak Sagar 70 mms, Upper Vaitarna 55 mms,  Bhatsa 52 mms, Tansa  49 mms.
Excerpts from Richa Pinto (Toi)

Mumbai: Not much of improvement till Friday for Mumbai..very occasional showers and sunny periods..

Now, from Friday, we have to wait and see the development of the Low in the Bay. A favourable development will improve the rainfall for Mumbai this weekend. Shall keep posted. Low expected to form by 21st June.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rains from the remnants of Vayu will Lash Rajasthan..As mentioned and forecasted in the 16th June Posting,

Pratapgarh 280 mm
Chittorgarh 195 mm
Silt lab 195 mm
Nithauwa 170 mm
Sabla 160 mm
Aspur 155 mm
Jagpura 145 mm
Udaipur(IMD) 140 mm
Jaisamand 136 mm
Semari 132 mm

In Gujarat:
Ahamdabad also got 53 mms, Valsad 25 mms, Surat 24 mms

The Well Marked Low (998 mb)  has produced clouding and rainfall in Gujarat...
Diu 44 mms, Veraval 25 mms, Okha 13 mms, Porbanadar 10 mms, Rajkot 9 mms, as on 18th morning.

West Coast off shore trough expected to take proper shape next few days.
The Low in the Bay expected around 21st..and track to be monitored. Could be studied if the Monsoon axis takes shape by then.
{Interior Maharashtra may not get the Monsoon rains before 23rd June...Sowing intimation as given in messages for Marathwada. Hold on sowing (Marathwada) till at least next intimation on 21st.}

Showers, occasional (infrequent and irregular) expected in Mumbai next 2 days as the Monsoon is expected to show a feeble progress Northwards towards Konkan.

No major changes in Pune weather next few days.

After Wednesday19th, days expected to get hot in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. Rising over 42/43c again.

Map showing the track of Vayu..Actual (Red) and Vagaries' Predicted (Blue)...
Now expected along the broken line and weakening.

With the 200 jet streams showing fast signs of becoming Easterlies upto 20N within 48 hrs, we see a change in the Climate soon...the Low as a remnant of Vayu will activate the off shore west coast trough in 48 hrs, Pulling up the Monsoon with required gradient upto about 20N along Coast in next 2 days........thus giving vigour  to the Monsoon.( May be temporary again...till  the Low develops in the North Bay around 21st.).
For interiors, we have to wait for the Bay Low, as Vagaries feel it will track along the Axis corridor.
Rainfall to now increase in South Rajasthan, West Saurashtra and Kutch for a day..

A North South trough from sikkim to Odisha will bring rains to Odisha and Chattisgarrh next 2 days.

Mumbai: Partly cloudy Monday with rains increasing on Tuesday. Windy during showers.

Pune : Partly cloudy with spotty rains in some parts..warm around 33/34c.

Posted 15th June:

Data compiled by Vagarian Abhijit and Map made by Vagarian Tejas

Technical Note:
The confusing "Vayu" continued its variable track due to the secondary Low Level convergence Zone. The Low level Divergence was present in the radius of about 400 kms from the centre. But the secondary low level convergence occurred at 1000 kms from the centre.
When the cyclone started moving West, the Secondary Low level convergence occurred over the West coast (Maharashtra Region), causing "outer band " rains.
The diabatic heating associated with the cyclone triggers a Rossby wave, with a ridge on the Peninsula in the lower and middle troposphere.
This will create a trough in the Bay head and activate the SWM in the Bay and west coast, pulling it North. Will create the required gradient also.
When Westerly winds approach the west coast, thry are de celareted due to western ghats. A zone of convergence is created off the coast.
Now, South of Goa, the winds are SW, But along the Maharsatra coast, the winds are Southerly, hence dynamics of off shore trough formation is absent.
An off shore trough today prevails from Goa to Kerala. With the re-curving of Vayu, a proper gradient will be created to help the SWM along the remaining west coast. If no recurving, then Bay activity should help Monsoon progress.
(As discussed with IMD scientists)

Hence Monsoon Limit stationary today at Northern limit of Goa and thence thru coastal Karnatak and TN.

Vayu is currently located at 20.8N and 67.4E, having moved slightly West.
Heavy rains likely to decrease in Saurashtra and Kutch for the next 2 days.
Yesterday also S Saurashtra lashed by heavy rain due to outer bands of cyclone Vayu

Sutrapada (Gir Somnath) 120
Talala (Gir Somnath) 100
Veraval(Gir Somnath) 90
Kodinar (Gir Somnath) 80
Kutiana (Porbandar) 60
