How and Why of Air Quality of Mumbai...

Vagaries' Views:

Mumbai has witnessed extreme "smog" quality air since the last 8 days. Various explanations from "construction Pollution" to " vast releases of gases".

But let us see and try to analyse the possible reasons for this through the meteorology lens.

Factually, construction or repair works or any burning of gases has commenced from 21st onwards, nor all these activities were "Banned" prior to 21st December.

From 20th, there was a severe dust storm blowing sand and dust over the Iraq region, which gradually increased and moved Eastwards. Now, in Meteorology terms, there was a strong "anticyclone at 3.1kms and 5.8 kms levels, centred over Arabian Peninsula, but having strong wind s blowing over Gujarat and into Maharashtra from the Arabian Sea . The dust was sucked in the Anticyclone.

Due to weight and partly from "temperature inversion", this moist dust was settling down and ground levels ( over Mumbai) and over the region.

(Under normal atmospheric conditions, air is warmer near the ground and colder at higher altitudes. In a temperature inversion, the situation “inverts,” and cold air at the surface gets trapped under a layer of warmer air.

A surface temperature inversion is likely to be present if: mist, fog, occurred. smoke or dust hangs in the air and moves sideways.)

Some areas and vulnerable parts of Mumbai saw heavier settlements of this combination due to the urban topography.

It was also noticed (for this reason), that though this combination smog was "suffocating'" and troublesome, the AQI was moderate...not severe.

The Dust Patch seems to have increased as per image on 29th December.

 19th December

*Cold wave conditions over India to abate, last week of December could see anomalously high temps. during day and night time (warm nights expected from Christmas to New year.

Extended range forecasts  indicate that the last week of December could see very warm temps. over most parts of India. Cold winter feeling could go missing for the next one week or more as an anomalous lower tropospheric cyclonic circulation is set to anchor over India and the neighboring regions facilitating tropical moisture incursion. Few nights can be exceptionally warm for this time of the year over parts of India.

Models also indicate the arrival of a stronger western disturbance over the western Himalayan regions by around 27/28th of December which could result in rainfall and cloudiness over north and parts of central India with fair chance of snowfall at higher elevations.

Mumbai:

Vagaries followed the cyclone " Fengal", and anticipated the warming of the Mumbai nights. The mildly pleasant night's turned warm and stuffy as the cyclone pushed in clouds along the West Coast.

The Change shown here 👇( Check the Green line rising )

Mumbai will have to wait till Saturday 8th December, when the city will see the day and night temperatures falling and cooler weather will be experianced. A fall of 5c in night temperatures is expected from Sunday 8th.

Pune: Pune saw a sharper rise and stiff warming due to the clouding from the cyclone. A sharp rise of 12c was experienced in 2/3 nights. ( Rising Green Line).

Partly cloudy with light rain possible to continue in Pune till 6th Dec. 8th onwards cooler and winter nights (10c) can be expected.

Sambhajinagar: Light rains expected on 5th/6th. Colder temperatures from 8th onwards.( 10/12c)

The 8th onwards effect of cooling will be possible as a fairly active Western Disturbances is expected in North India from 8th. Active rain and snow will bring in Northly cool winds Southwards.

Strong Jet Streams at 250 kmph are prevailing over North India.

Expected 200 jet streams on 8th shows Trough over N.India.👇

Colder weather is expected from the weekend in Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Ahemdabad, Vadodara, Bharuch can drop below 15c from Sunday 8th.
