As the series of January WDs ( 9/10 in all) move away, we have seen very good rainfall in NW and Northern India. 
East winds interacting with the WDs also gave rains to Odisha, M.P. and Chattisgarh and parts of West Bengal and Vidharbh in Jan. 27.9 mms of average all India rains in January 2020..another weather phenomena.
Ideal weather for a bumper Rabi crop. Wheat will benefit most with good precipitation and low temperatures.
Some rainfall will occur in Odisha next few days due to a North/South trough from W.Bengal- Odisha.
Strong NE winds in Saurashtra on 1st/2nd Feb.
Western Disturbance F-1 approaching Northern India Sub Continent on 4th Feb

Days remain warm over the Southern Peninsula ..With Madurai (T.N.) recording 36.6c on 30th.

Mumbai /Pune Forecast till 3rd Feb::
So Mumbai got the anticipated "Pleasant"weather, with the Lowest  (this spell) falling to 13.6c at Scruz and 16c at Colaba.on 30th. (Need to recheck on Colaba official reading of 31st Jan. Not considered for now).
Now, from Friday 31st Jan - Monday 3rd Feb: , Mumbai will see a gradual rise in night temperatures. The "cold" effect will decrease as the minimum rises from 14c to around 18/19c. However days will remain moderately comfy  and sunny at around 30/31c.

Pune: The moderate cold spell (11c) is over as the nights rise to 15c. Days getting warmer.

Heavy snow in Shimla, Kufri 


Shimla got 10.2cm of snowfall and recorded a low of-1c, while the nearby tourist town of Kufri got 45cm of snowfall and shivered at -4.4c.

Intense cold wave conditions prevail in Himachal; Shimla and Solang vall...


More Snow in H.P. on 28th:

Kufri received 20 cm of snow, followed by Kothi 15 cm, Kalpa 11 cm, Shimla and Dalhousie 8 cm each, Kharapathar 7.6 cm, Manali 3 cm and Gondala, and Pooh 2 cm each, while widespread rain lashed the middle and lower hills. Solan was the wettest, followed by Kasauli and Dharamsala.

Fine, sunny and dry weather prevails over the Deccan plateau. 
North Deccan plateau is cooler than South Deccan plateau.

Nights can get cold  ..

Diurnal temp range can be very high and go upto 25 c ..


During this period , the average temps over Deccan plateau show a marginal increase as compared to the mid January period of Makar Sankranti.

Cold wave conditions to revive in Kutch, Saurashtra and Maharasthra from 28th January.

Mumbai: Last Three days in a row of 34.5c...constant...and that is hot !
Change from Monday, as westerlies take over. Drop n day temperatures starting Monday.
Cool Mumbai weather from Tuesday to Friday
A cloudy Tuesday (Light rains in some parts of city possible) with cool day at a maximum of 26c and Wednesday at 25/26c. Nights in suburbs can drop to 14/15c on Thursday and Friday.

Pune: Also now hot at 32c, will cool down Monday 27th. onwards.  Nights cooling starts from Monday till Friday 31st, and With  gradually cooling ,The Low can fall to single digit by Thursday 30th.

More rains/snow for Northern India from 27th...An active Western Disturbance J-4, is approaching the Northern plains and Hills of India.

Monday 27th: Moderate  rains /snow commence in Kashmir, Ladakh, H.P, and hills of Uttarkhand. 
Some showers in pockets of Punjab, Haryana and West U.P.
Light rain patches in Vidharbh. Rain possible in Nagpur.

Tuesday 28th: Heavy rains and snow in Kashmir, Ladakh, H.P. and moderate widespread rains in Punjab, Haryana, West U.P.and Delhi.
showers of light to moderate intensity in Rajasthan, West M.P.
Light rains also likely in parts of Saurashtra and parts of North Konkan.

Wednesday 29th: third day rains /snow continue in Northern Hills. Rains decreasing in plains.
Moderate rains in West Bengal and Jharkhand.
Kolkata: Rain/Thundershowers possible.

Delhi will get showers from  Monday and into Tuesday. Days will get cooler in the Punjab/Haryana/Delhi region, with days dipping below 18c.

The days have become very hot along the West coast and many parts of Southern India last few days...with Mangalore recording highest of 38c...Due to Easterlies blowing in the Southern Peninsula.
Days in the mentioned region will get cooler as the West winds take over from Monday 27th.

# Festive weather series .. Makar Sankranti

South India 

The festival is during the core winter season over India ..

1. South Indian coastal plains
South East India ( Tamilnadu Andhra) has it's mildest weather of the year during this period. The temps are range bound (don't deviate much from the average).
South West India (Coastal Karnataka , Kerala ) has warmer weather than South East India coast. Kerala coast has almost tropical weather. Night temps decrease a bit as we move away from the coastline though days remain warm.



2. South Indian Deccan plateau
Southern Deccan Plateau (Interior Karnataka , Telangana) has 
fine,dry weather during this time of the year.
Southern Deccan plateau is less prone to the cold night temps of the Northern Deccan Plateau (Maharashtra).
Also, it has comparatively less extremes of diurnal temp range than North Deccan plateau.

Diurnal temp range is lower than Western India.





2. North India plains  
North India has foggy and cool to cold weather during Makar Sankranti ..
North India can get very cold.
It may rain due to passing Western disturbances and cold day conditions may prevail.
