Clouds of dust darkened the sky as winds swept across southeastern Iran in January 2025. Some of the desert dust was carried across the Gulf of Oman to the Arabian Peninsula, degrading air quality for those in its path.
The MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this image of several dust plumes on January 22. The airborne material appears to primarily originate in the dried bed of the intermittent lake known as Hamun-e Jazmurian (Hamun-e Jaz Murian), while some may be blown from coastal areas. Along with arid regions such as the Garagum and Lut deserts and the Sistan Basin, the lakebed is a major source of dust in southwest Asia.

In the last seven days alone, another winter storm and an arctic burst have worked their way across the United States — adding to a very active January of winter weather.
While there were warnings of a potential storm coming through the Gulf Coast, the snow and cold temperatures — labeled by AccuWeather as “once in a generation” — caused upwards of $14 billion in damages, experts at the weather bureau said late Tuesday afternoon. In some areas of the region, blizzard warnings were issued for the first time in recorded history in anticipation of the storm.
Parts of southeast Texas and Louisiana got over 6 inches of snow, while even Mississippi, Alabama, and northern Florida reported substantial snowfall on the ground.
The arctic burst tore its way through the Midwest and the Corn Belt, eventually impacting up to 41 states and over 230 million people, AccuWeather reported. In Colorado, wind gusts jumped to nearly 80 mph in places in addition to temperatures well below zero.
Houston rarely sees snowfall. The top five snow events are:
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Stacking up the 2021 freeze to the snowfall in 2025 is an apples-to-oranges comparison.
The first big difference is the size of the storms.
In 2021, the cold weather impacted every single Texas county; this week's storm impacted the southeast. This fact made all the difference in the outcome.
Because the 2021 storm was so widespread, everyone was drawing large amounts of power from the independent Texas power grid.
Unable to borrow supply from other states, people used more than the grid had available, resulting in a catastrophic failure.
In 2021, over half the state lost power, plunging people into the dark and cold for weeks.
People died of hypothermia. Some resorted to using generators at home and died of carbon monoxide poisoning.
A lack of power made it hard for some to cook or follow boil water notices.
Some parts of Texas don't have snowplows or brine trucks, and iced-over roads cause intense crashes. Emergency crews couldn't get to destinations, and trucks had a hard time delivering food, resulting in a grocery shortage.
In total, almost 250 people died.

IT'S COLD IN THE U.S....⛄☃
www.weather.gov/source/crh/snowmap.html
Dry, Arctic air pushing well to the south is forcing the storm and its wintry precipitation to hug the Gulf Coast of the U.S., which rarely experiences even flurries, let alone several inches of snow like the storm is set on delivering.
"This will be a rare and especially dangerous winter storm right along the upper Gulf Coast that will result in major and lengthy disruptions to travel," AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jonathan Porter said.
The last time New Orleans experienced more than a few snowflakes was 15 years ago in December 2009. Since 1948, enough snow to measure has only fallen eight times. This could be the biggest storm in a lifetime for the New Orleans area, as well as much of southern Louisiana and the central Gulf coast.
The last time there was enough snow to measure in Jacksonville, Florida, was during the Christmas week storm of 1989. Nearly 2 inches of snow fell during the event.
Snow in Houston is uncommon but not nearly as rare as that of New Orleans and Jacksonville. Houston's last snowfall was in February 2021, during the mega freeze that brought up to half a foot of snow from parts of Texas to portions of northern and central Louisiana and Mississippi.
The biggest snowstorm on record in the now-I-10 corridor was the blockbuster storm more than 100 years ago, from Feb. 14-15, 1895, which dumped a whopping 6-20 inches of snow along the Texas and Louisiana coasts.
A swath of 1-6 inches of snow with locally higher amounts will extend from just inland of the upper Texas coast to the Carolina coast. An AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 14 inches is most likely near and just north of Interstate 10.
"Travel will be dangerous or impossible for hours to days after the storm along vast stretches of the I-10 corridor," AccuWeather Meteorologist Brandon Buckingham said.
"It's not too often a storm with snow passes Atlanta by to the south, but that is how this southern U.S. storm is shaping up," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Bob Larson said.
With this storm setup, heavy snow will tend to hug the Gulf and southern East coasts. Still, it could deliver spotty snow showers and slippery travel as far north as parts of the Jackson, Mississippi, Birmingham, Alabama, Atlanta, and Charlotte metro areas.
