Couldn't agree more Rohit...thanks to the one person who is the flag bearer of this vagaries group...

SSET has made an important point in the previous comments section about priority of providing water to water deficit areas...while population of the globe has tripled since 1950..in India it has gone up from 370 million to about 1300 million which is 3.5 times higher...but the annual rainfall of India continues to remain at between 1000 to 1100 mm...so the per capita availability has crashed.

Recent research has shown that the Indus Valley Civilization ended around 1900 bc due to drying up of the Sarasvati and changes in monsoon rainfall...the surviving people eventually migrated mostly to the eastern Gangetic belt...(read the book 'The lost river...' by Michael Danino.)

My only request to SSET is to highlight this in other important forums etc and maybe start a awareness campaign which is meaningful. Vagaries should not be the only place where these issues are discussed..generally the readers here are more concerned with current weather analysis and its data..not its long term consequences.

It is nice to see that Western India is getting good rains. We in south Karnataka (Bangalore and south of Bangalore) are staring at another drought year. My farm near Malavalli has received 5 mm rains since June :( And the stream nearby (Shimsa rivulet) has become totally dry. I see a pattern now (I am observing this since last 9 years). The monsoons are failing regularly in this region (south interior karnataka excluding parts of Western ghats) and rains are now shifting towards north karnataka.
It is becoming scarier by the day.

It is time to study what is going wrong with such abrupt climate events in these stations to better understand environment al impacts. That will benefit the larger community than just basking in the feeling of pride from these numbers.
