No explanation for this sudden development of strato-cumulus clouds and medium clouding over Mumbai. Unable to give reasoning despite checking all parameters. No low, no vortex, no UAC, so all ruled out. Wind SSE and pressure 1010 mb. Any suggestions ?

Infact the lightning map shows lightning just off the North Mumbai coast now.

The 500 MB GFS map for today shows some spin aorund the Gujarat region. Could be because of that? The 700 MB chart for precipitation also shows potential for 10 mms rains around Mumbai. Although the CAPE is shown as quite less.

This is just my hypothesis, could be completely off track

The IMD in it's afternoon bulletin reports of a shear line existing at 15 Degrees North. Could this be the reason for the current Mumbai weather (cloudy and overcast)?

was kinda wondering the same thing..there is nothing being shown on the satellite pics & its been dark all day...maybe what nt says is true...

Cloud Work Function was 300-500 J/Kg. from Noon till 6 pm. also tomorrow 2 pm. to 5 pm. same CWF of 300-500 J/Kg.

When cyclone crosses in the outer most periphery [or in the rear] cumulus could formation is possible. The upper portions of the clouds might have been taken along the anticyclonic winds [for Mumbai,SSEly].
I do not know any 'lightning Maps" nor cloud work function [?]. But the presumption of shear near 15 Deg N may be correct.

Today morning sprang another surprise in Mumbai extended suburbs (Kasara to Panvel). Fog (not smog) reduced visbility to around 100 mts. And these were real clouds and I found myself coming from the warmer confines of house onto road getting enveloped with immedate condensation on the body - could feel the tiny prickles of water condensing.
Is the the emotional farewell of SWM with clouds crying and hugging the ground ??

Yes, of course. Light gentle wind with higher percentage moisture lead to the formation of FOG in Mumbai. Accord farewell to SWM 2010.
