F5 active today, Thursday, in Kashmir and H.P.
Kashmir has been witnessing incessant rains in the plains and snowfall in the higher reaches.
There has been fresh snowfall in the Bannihal Tunnel of the Srinagar-Jammu highway and over one foot of snow has accumulated on the road in this sector,
In H.P., slight rain and snowfall continued in northern areas of the state.
The 13050 feet high Rohtang Pass recorded 15 to 20 feet thick layer of snow which is highest in the last 20 years.
Video of Simla weather here.

F5 will be out of Pakistan by tomorrow, but prevailing remnant moisture will bring isolated pockets of rain in Punjab and upper Sindh till Saturday.Expect day temperatures to rise suddenly from Sunday, specially in Sindh, as they are appreciably below normal there today (Sibi had a high of only 16c).
Northern India (including Punjab, Haryana and N.Rajasthan) will receive the precipitations till Saturday, when the F5 fizzles out in the mountains of Western Nepal.

An easterly trough with an UAC embedded in it, is expected to batter rains along Eas
tern Sri Lanka and Southern T.N. and Southern most Kerala on the weekend.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, days were very much below normal in NW India, and getting warmer, gradually,in the central regions, except, the interiors of southern India.(Refer Vagaries temp. forecast put up yesterday).

Highest in India, on Thursday, was 37c at Akola, and 36.6c at Baroda. Our other poll candidates were Nagpur at 35.6c and Solapur at 35.3c and Rama
gundum at 35.2c.

Highest in Asia remains Prome in Myanmar, at 38c.
Map shows day temperatures still substantially low throughout Pakistan.

Mumbai can make the most of this weather till Sunday.
Vagaries expects a rise in temperatures, albiet for a few days, from Sunday, and Monday can shoot up to 38c !

More on the Mark's Blog itself...
emkay, sorry for not being clear and leaving things unexplained...
F5 is the last W.D. of Feb. And the numbering of W.Ds in March could start with M1. Easier that way.

Mumbai: Last of W.D. effect over by Sunday. Summer to take a firm initial grip on city. Monday could see 38c !

India is a vast country, stretching from 8N way up to 35N. And there can be huge variations in climate and weather in such a difference in latitude. As well as the geographical topography differs all along the length of the country.

When does Summer begin for our region? On the basis of previous years' behaviour of the rising temperatures, and from past records and observations, i would consider 1st March as the start of the Summer season for the entire stretch of India, barring the Northern States of Kashmir, H.P. Utterakhand, and the NE states , east of Bangladesh.
These exempted states have a prolonged winter, by 15 days, before they too fall prey to the blazing sub-continent sun.
And, normally, the behaviour of the rising temperatures, that is the "route" summer would take is from the South towards the North.

Too early ? You think 1st March is an early assumption of Summer arrival date ?

Well, look at this image of the not to distant future !
1st March 2009, and the 41s are into sindh (Pakistan).

And for the Northward movement of Summer, check this image of 14th. March 2008. 47c in Sindh !

Last year, 2010 March, was hot from the start itself. Reason: A high pressure ridge at 500 mb had established itself over the Sindh/Gujarat region in early March itself. This ridge moved east and plonked over NW India.
This prevented the westerlies, and the jet streams, associated with the W.Ds from coming and precipitating over the sub-continent. Instead the W.D.s and cold fronts were pushed up further North into Central Asia last year.

Well, we have exceptional years like this image too ! March 14th. 2007.

March 2011 has F5 transversing across the Northern States of the sub-continent till the 5th. of March. So week 1 is ok and cool. As of now, week 2 has no W.D. coming up to keep things cool. But M1 is a possibility around 10th.March. But we will wait and watch for the developments.
I see temperatures rising after 8th. March in the Northern regions. But central regions will see rising temperatures by about 2c in the 1st week itself.

Mumbai: 25% cloudy with SE breeze. Warm at 31c at noon. N breeze (F5 effect), will commence from evening and bring down the temperature this evening.
F5 effective in North. Digging in deeper into N.India tomorrow.
